Toured the old headquarter of the Red Cross and learned the story of its founder Ms. Clara Barton via a ranger guided tour. The furniture was off site for maintenance — checked in to Clara Barton National Historic Site (U.S. National Park Service).
Clarissa "Clara" Harlowe Barton was a pioneering
nurse who founded the American Red Cross. She worked as a hospital nurse in the
American Civil War, and as a teacher and patent clerk. Ms. Barton is noteworthy
for doing humanitarian work at a time when relatively few women worked outside
the home.
